How to create the right image

Your business portrait is perhaps the first thing a potential new customer is going to see when doing a google search for your company. So what can we do to make the right impression first time and keep that persons attention?

Where to start

Firstly think about where the photograph is going to be taken, it could be at your business premises, in a studio, on location, or like the above photograph it could be at a venue. Wherever it is taken it should be against an uncluttered background which might otherwise be distracting.

Secondly, think about how you look. If you work predominantly in an office environment then it is good to look smart and wear a tie, this might be controversial if you have a more relaxed office environment, but remember you are trying to promote yourself and your business in a professional manner.

Thirdly, try a few expressions, your photographer should be able to direct you and make you feel at ease. Personally I think a good smile works best.

Fourth, think about where your photograph is likely to sit on the page. This photograph shows exactly the best position if the photo box is placed in the top left hand corner of the site. Ideal for places such as LinkedIn. This promotes a positive appearance as the subject is looking in towards the page. Also don’t forget the we generally read from left to right, so it is good to start with your photograph in the best position on the page.

Finally, and this is down to the skill of the photographer. Make sure that your face is evenly lit. This is not the time to be using dramatic lighting that cast shadows across the face. This is especially so for ladies, the light should be soft and even producing a flattering and appealing result.
